Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for work surface
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/3 cup packed dark-brown sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 12 chocolate sugar ice cream cones
  • 4 Kit Kat bars (1 1/2 ounces), cut into 1/4-inch pieces
  • 3 Hershey’s Milk Chocolate bars (5 ounces), chopped and melted
  • 6 pieces sour gummy candy belts, cut in half

Directions

In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, cloves, salt, and baking soda.

Place butter and brown sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment; mix on medium speed until pale and fluffy, about 4 minutes. Add egg and molasses; mix until combined. Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture; mix until just combined. Halve dough; shape into disks. Wrap each disk in plastic; refrigerate until cold, about 1 hour.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Working with 1 disk at a time, roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/4-inch thick. (If dough becomes too soft at any time, freeze until firm.) Cut dough into 12 circles using a 3 1/2-inch round cutter; space 1 inch apart on baking sheets lined with a nonstick baking mat or parchment paper. Refrigerate until firm, about 20 minutes.

Bake, rotating sheets halfway through, until firm, 11 to 13 minutes. Cool on sheets on wire racks.

Line a baking sheet with parchment. Holding a sugar cone upright in your hand, fill with Kit Kat bar pieces. Using a small brush, paint a thick layer of melted chocolate around the rim of the cone. Hold 1 cookie, bottom side up, over the cone, centering it, and press to adhere to the cone. Turn upright and place on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat process with remaining cookies and cones. Chill for 10 minutes to set. Remove from refrigerator and paint entire surface of hats (cones and cookies) with chocolate. Chill until set, about 20 minutes, then tie candy belts around the base of each hat.

I made this with fudge stripe cookies at the base instead...much less time consuming and same effect. Also used green frosting versus the gummy candy to wrap around the hat.

Cute idea but the cookies are horrible tasting. Ended up making peanut butter cookies to replace the inedible cookies used in this recipe. I find Martha's crafty ideas great but her recipes are usually ridiculously difficult and not very tasty. Disappointing.

Why not use fudge to fill the hats. It would set up at room temperature. Be dryer than ice cream and stay together unlike cookie pieces. A fudge with kit kat bar pieces or mint fudge. Peanut butter fudge with nutter butter pieces. To stand up the cones/ hats so you can fill them. try using a cooling rack over a smaller sheet cake pan. should work depending on the rack holes. Oh-oh I feel a sweet tooth coming on! LOL

Use a regular ice cream cone and make a Pilgrim's hat. Good for Thanksgiving.

I made these for Halloween, but instead of candy i filled the regular sugar cones with ice cream and placed them on a store bought sugar cookie that I had frosted with chocolate frosting (also store bought). I then froze them. They were not fancy witches's hate, but they looked cute, tasted delicious and everyone loved them!

You could dip regular ice cream cones in chocolate...

Where do you get chocolate sugar ice cream cones? There are none to be found in Atlanta Georgia. I've spent hours searching the internet and searching the websites of ice cream cone companies and nobody (and I mean nobody) makes or sells them.

Candy belts....I would buy shoestring Red Licorice and cut to size then just tie a bow and use some frosting to secure it. As for Ice Cream sure that would work just great.

I couldn't find the sour gummy candy belts, so I used Pull

I love these. I wonder if you could fill the come with softened ice cream and freeze them....anyone have a thought on this.

Hmm - I prefer the kit kat pieces, or at least some other dry filler. With the pie filling you run the risk of the cone getting soggy, especially if you're making them a day ahead...

One could pipe a filling into the cones in place of the KitKat pieces.
